Air Conditioning Circuit

A central air conditioning circuit is wired to code with disconnect, etc. However, the air conditioning season is very short and the owner would like to use this 240 volt circuit during the winter for wall heating units. Is this permitted if a switch is installed in the line to ensure that electricity goes to either the AC or the heater but not both?

Re: Air Conditioning Circuit

I see nothing wrong with it since only one or other would ever be needed. Why not just add a heat strip to air handler.

Re: Air Conditioning Circuit

Thanks for the reply. I found no reason in the code the A/C line could not be switched in this manner but was running into inspector concerns with the A/C being "dedicated".

I tried to point out that the breaker effectively could switch the unit off, just like a switch in the line. And with the switch in the line, the heater and A/C could not both be on at the same time, but he said he needed to research it more.

I am to meet with him again on Thursday so I'm hoping for some better luck, even if I don't have a specific code quote to present to him.
