Air Handler Fire Alarm question

I have a senario where there is a small office building the we just replaced the air handler/AC unit. The new unit is 10,000 CFM which means it needs a duct detector. Per the mechanical engineer the mechanical contractor installed a duct detector in the supply side of the unit that will shut it down in the event of smoke. My questions is does the AHU need to be controlled by the existing fire alarm panel? Or can we bring a normally closed loop to the unit that if the duct detector goes into alarm it will set off the fire alarm? Thanks

If you are using the IMC the smoke duct detector only needs to set off a trouble signal if it is a monitored system. Either way you propose would meet code provided proper annunciation was provided as per NFPA 72 section 4.4.6.
