Am I a genius or am I reinventing the wheel?

Well if you go through the roof you were usually a little more careless as you should sort of known how far you can push that bit before it is too far. Especially if not at the low end of the roof where you are drilling.

Maybe thats a cathedral ceiling?

That roof peek runs perpendicular to a crawl area wall of an attic area. It is a cathedral ceiling in that room with joists and the roof, no attic.
They wanted a ceiling fixture installed so I needed to get a wire from that outlet point to the attic area. Thought I could drill straight through from attic crawl space to outlet hole, but it wasn't happening. Thought I could bend the bit enough to drill from outlet hole to crawl space.... but as you see it didn't work out.

It's hard to see from the picture but I got through a joist or two but it slid up through that peek roof gap where they leave a gap in the sheathing for the peek venting. You can see that foam mesh wrapped around the bit.

I got the wire in and chandelier up, and had to do a some roofing. From what I recall it wasn't as bad as it looks. A roofing nail or two and some roof cement. Could have been worse. (could have been better too ;))
