Is there a formula to figure ambient temperature?
The reason I ask is metal halide bulb 400 watts can reach up to max temp of 500 C. The base max can reach up to 230 C. Whoever did this job ran the wireright behind the reflector plate. Well the wires are showing signs of heat. Is there insulation shield that could be put in to place behind the reflector plate? Another option is too rerun wire to away from the bulb reflector.
Thanks.

I don't know a formula, but a thermometer works pretty good.
Ambient temperature is the surrounding air temperature.

Air space is a good insulator. If the wires are touching the metal, you have conductive heat going into the wires. Make sure they are not touching.

The further the better.
