Re: Ampacity Question

This reminds me of that 8 hour exam several years ago! And the recent one at that!

Re: Ampacity Question

There are many questions similar to this one on many standardized electrical exams. Some takers will be tricked into thinking conductor proection is the same thing as conductor ampacity.

In this example, the circuit rating is 15A. The overcurrent protection required is limited to 15A, however the conductors could be loaded to 20A before reaching 60? C.

Re: Ampacity Question

Suppose the question was changed to:

What is the ampacity of 14/2 nmb at 30 DEG C ambient used on a motor branch circut connected to a 40A breaker?

a. 15A

b. 20A

c. 25A

d. 40A

Re: Ampacity Question

Al these surely aren't homework questions? ;)

Re: Ampacity Question

It's the same thing. The 40A breaker is not an overload device, it only protects against ground-faults and short-circuits. The NM will still be protected at its ampacity by motor overloads.
