Probably a stupid question: It looks like the code stayed roughly the same size up until WW2. Is the fact that is started to grow substantially afterward due to advances directly resulting from the war?

Advances in technology. Increased safety regulations (grounded receps, etc.). More required circuits (SABCs, bath, laundry.....). Today, it's AFIs, TR receps, etc.
 
I'm more curious why 1949 is so much bigger than its surrounding years. The current versions also look a little exaggerated (I'm guessing they are binders and not the soft cover versions).
