Pretty much wrong tool for the job. Those are safety tools to show voltage in proximity and can vary greatly in their sensitivity.
If you truly want to measure presence of voltage use a meter or for most of the situations you have presented a Wiggy.

I use a wiggy just for initial test, then follow with a volt meter
