another ansul question

on a recent kitchen install,my hood fan and hood lights had to be switched together.On ansul activation the lights had to go out and the hood fan had to run.I used two contactors switching the hood in parallel, st breaker would turn off the lights and contactor 1.Then the ansul system would activate contactor 2.This was a PITA to wire and is going to be a bigger PITA to service,is there an easier way?
 
See if anything here is helpful. I drew it as two circuits, but it can obviously be one. The motors can either be direct (if 120v) or can be 2- or 3-pole contactors if necessary. If there's a gas valve, it can be powered from the intake-fan wire. I find contactors to be easier and cheaper, unless there are already shunt-trips in the panel.

quog please read the question,I am simply asking is there an easier way of doing this e.g a manufacturer that makes an all in one package.
 
Typically, there are two microswitches in the Ansul cabinet. I typically see one contactor (for a basic/small kitchen) depending on the number of appliances that need to shut off. The contactor is activated by the microswitch in the Ansul cabinet via 120 VAC switch leg. The contactor kills the makeup air fan, electric appliances, and gas valve (if electric). The second microswitch in the Ansul cabinet activates the building fire alarm system (if provided).

Never had to turn off lights..:-?

i agree with everything,but we would kill the lights !!
 
Noisy contactors?

Noisy contactors?

Do you experience a loud howling sound with contactors? I am using Cutler Hammer definite purpose contactors in a kitchen with several electric appliances, i.e. grill and two electric BBQ pits under an Ansul system. These are 30 amp 230 volt (coil) contactors and they seem to make a lot of noise. They are "open" unless the coils are powered, and wired in so when the Ansul system activates it opens the activation circuit shutting everything down. This means these contactors are howling away during regular operation. It is annoying, and a little scary to hear. Like something isn't right....Any thoughts? I could sure use some help.....
