Retired after 52 years in the trade.
While this is not exactly a glaring NEC violation, this was done 12 times in this building. Once well you did not have a chase nipple on your truck 12 times into new 12 time clocks, you had to make at least one trip to the supply house.

The installer could have cut the connector off so that it would look more like a chase nipple.

Exactly, and this is no life and death issue more to a little bit of quality or concern for jobs overall looks.

Hell, for that matter, take a Romex connector, cut off the protruding end, file smooth with a round file and make your own chase-nipple. Not my favorite method, but it works:D
