For the most part all the meggers from major manufactures I have used are decent. It really depends on what you are doing with the instrument (crank, battery, line connected, multiple test voltages, resolution ECT), this will drive the cost up.

So, for testing feeder wires (≤ 800A) and finding AFC faults the Ideal Megger would be fine?

Are we looking for deteriorated insulation on the neutral conductor that would put it in contact with the ground? If so will not a simple ohmmeter perform this test? Would this be a handy tool for troubleshooting AFCI circuits?

Let me see 9 VDC versus 500-1000 VDC NO, not in a large distribution system, The right tool for the job.

Not to mention a maximum scale of a few hundred thousand ohms versus billions of ohms. Typically your minumum spec is 100 Million ohms, and ohm meter just dosent cu the mustard.

i finnally understand what a megger does with that post of zogs - now i gotta have one

Fluke's 1507 is a great megohmeter. It has the capability of PI/DAR testing as well as a comparitive feature.

What are all the rest of you using?

I imagine if i hook an ohm meter up to an entire circuit it will not have enough power to travel throughout the circuit because dc voltage drops so quickly. Therefore 1000 volts is needed to complete the entire circuit?
