So by now every one knows Murray and ITE breakers all roll off the same line. But they are not listed as interchangeable. I bought this factory sealed AFCI today do you think they have listed by default with this? look closely.

Which once again begs the question - why can't Siemens just go ahead and list Murray and Siemens for interchangeability? It's just utterly absurd to have two identical product lines that can't be interchanged.

Not that it matters to me anyway because I avoid Siemens products unless I absolutely have to use them.

Peter D, just out of curiousity why do you avoid siemens ? I personally think they are the best quality panels/breakers except for Square D

In the late 70's (when I was an electrical contractor), I used ITE and thought they made a great product but I never used Murray. At the time, I believe they were different companies and the definitely operated differently. Do you know they are made on the same line and to the same specifications? There could be some Minor differences and there could be a run of Murray one day and two days of running ITE. I am reasonably sure that UL lists them separately. :-?

I know I can see the difference in the bus bars between Murray and siemens, Murray Busses are of much lower quality. Breakers seem identical to me, unless the internals have something different.

In the late '70's I-T-E would be changing from I-T-E Imperial Corp. to Gould*/I-T-E and Murray prob. would be part of Crouse-Hinds (Have no idea when Murray became part of Crouse-Hinds) Siemens-Allis bought the I-T-E line around 1984, & Siemens bought Murray in the last 10 years or so.

*Gould Inc. bought ITE in 1976.

okay, so the breaker is listed as interchangeable with several makes of load centers, but are the load centers interchangeable with the breakers?

It's kinda like having an AcDelco spark plug, and having a listing saying it's interchangeable with motorcraft spark plugs. It may only work in one engine, but it's enough to print it on the box!

Yes. Square D tried to say that you will void the warrenty if you use another manufacturer's circuit breaker in their panelboard but they couldn't make it stick. The NRTL lists circuit breakers for each panelboard that they are compatible with and you are permitted to use another manufacture's circuit breaker in all of the panelboards that are listed.

Alright, as long as someone with authority says it's okay, it's okay. It's kinda like the "Warranty Void if Removed" sticker on the back of your computer, or a car warranty being voided by not using OE parts, the warranty is in effect if the parts are listed for that use, the claim is null and void in a court of law thanks to the Magnuson Morris Warranty Act
