Opened up a floor in a old house total remodel and found an old black pedestal phone. It was wired on a three wire system. I was able to rewire to a two wire system using the original parts and it still works to this day. You just have to speak a little loud.
 
My belief was it was used for insulation on the cheap.
I would think the structure would require some beefing up to handle the weight and to keep the wall from bowing out. I calculate about 1,000 lbs for an 11 ft wall (8 ft high).

Our old house had nothing but wood siding, framing, tar paper, and plaster but was no energy hog.

I do like houses with sand in the crawl space: no muddy mess.

PS: Aren't you glad you did not cut in the box first?
