No. Check out 310.7 Direct-Burial Conductors shall be of type identified for such use. Also read 310.8 for THWN uses. If your looking for underground feeders and branch circuits without a raceway read article 340. If your looking for Direct-Burial Service Conductors read 338 for USE. If you use any of these you should also read 300.5.
 
you can as a grounding electrode conductor :smile:
but I doubt that is what you mean.
As part of a wiring system, 300.3 requires you to use condcutors listed in 310.13(A) (such as THWN) with a Chapt 3 wiring method.
THWN is not listed for direct burial.

i agree with all of that, but I would also suggest reading 300.3(A).

Welcome to the forum!! You have come to the right place. Were are you located? Alot of us are on the 2008 NEC. And yes I would also agree, read 300.3 (A). I'm sure I have missed others but its a start.
