Electrican installed a 225 amp service for a house, also installed a 200 amp main breaker sub panel upstairs fed with 4/0 al SER cable from a 125 amp breaker located in 225a main panel, should this be allowed since sub has 200a main brk. or should sub have been MLO panel.

What difference does the breaker size in the subpanel make as long as the breaker feeding it protects the wires going to that subpanel?

Re: Approve or Reject

Costs more though,we buy at least 3,000 main breaker panel a year to buy a few MLO panels the cost goes over the edge. When we do a spit service we use what is on hand MBR panels no addition cost no additional ordering of a single MLO panel.
Any thoughts??? :D

Re: Approve or Reject

How did he land 4/0 on a 125 amp breaker? Did he have to cut some of the strands off?

Re: Approve or Reject

There is nothing wrong with this.I myself would have installed a 125 amp mlo panel and fed it with 125 amp wiring, but if you install as many panels as a.wayne's company does, they could buy the main breaker subpanels cheaper than I could buy a main lug panel of the same brand, that may be the case here.

Re: Approve or Reject

the question has been asked already!and not answered.HOW DO YOU TERMINATE 4/0s? the other answer are nice but most times it will not fit

Re: Approve or Reject

On another note we switched from homeline to GE panels unless speced otherwise I for one like them .we use #6 as a/c and heat unit feeds why? a 5 kw unit can have a max over 30 amps and we got burned all to many times on finals.32 amps # 10 is not allowed.homeline breakers have lugs rated at close to the ampacity rating so a 30 amp homeline breaker has to have the wire down sized with a joint in the panel but GE lugs are the same size 30 and up JMHO.

Re: Approve or Reject

just because its a 125 amp breaker doesnt mean the largest wire you can get in it is a #1 or 1/0

on the job i just came off of, the cutler hammer breakers in our MCCs might be 20 or 30 amps, but you could easily put a #1 in the terminals without clipping any strands

some manufactures actually consider that electricians might want to run something larger than the Minimum

For long runs you are often forced to run larger sizes of wire than you might for shorter sizes anyway so I suspect CB terminals allow you to up size at least a couple wire sizes.

Re: Approve or Reject

I have never seen a 125 amp. breaker that could accommodate 4/0 AL in a residentially panel.Altering the circular mil size with a pair of dikes is the only way I see it fitting

Re: Approve or Reject

I dont know how he terminated it, but I have used a reducing crimp-on adapter many times for simular applications, especially where wire is upped for VD. They come in various sizes that will allow installation easily on 100a or larger breakers..........RP
