I know that 334.10 outlines the "permitted for" and 334.12 outlines the "not permitted for" use for NM cable, but it doesn't clearly identify if NM is approved to be installed in EMT on the exterior of a single family dwelling. Can anyone offer clarification?

Thanks

225.22 Raceways on Exterior Surfaces of Buildings or Other Structures
Raceways on exteriors of buildings or other structures shall be arranged to drain and shall be raintight in wet locations.

This basically says conduits on exteriors of buildings will have moisture in them, so being that NM is for normally dry locations it would be prohibited.

I know I'm going to start trouble....... but, :) my Dad installed some Romex to his well pump, and to an out building burried about 6 inches deep about 1979 and it is still working fine. I scolded him after he done it, but he said it would last longer than he did!

We will all pray for your dad.He has created a shock hazard that some day will either get him or someone else.Be a good son and go do it right before its too late.

hocky....I am gonna throw something out there....my Dad did a lot of things 30 to 40 years ago that I would have a nervous breakdown over today....question....the "romex" cable your Dad buried was in 1979.....today that would be 27 years...also buried 6 inches deep....maybe it was code back then....the nearest code book I have is 1987....wire was a lot tougher back then, I will not concur that it was code in 1979....remember Knob and tube and Aluminum wire(12 and 10) were hot items in their day...Dad would use 30 amp plug fuses in that old panel with (14) wire and lamp cord for switchs...did the house burn...no...could it have...absolutely! Dad is gone now, but the old house still stands....plug fuses and all!! wildman

Simple answer: inside a conduit is not a "location". If the conduit is outdoors, so is the wire within.
