Im glad I posted here. You folks gave me lots of ammo for my inspector. I was quite surprised by the volume of responses here. Thank you all

Sometimes...these threads seem to take on a life of their own, going beyond a normal Q & A session to a full rethinking of the logic in the "A".
Some of these threads have provided enough info to change my own stubborn mind/ways.

It is, but look at the opening question.

It has nothing to do with how the self test button works. It is about an inspector failing a job because of Ideal 'tester'.

At least I gave him a useful reference up front as to what the problem could be at a technical level. And like many threads here the topic expanded
I would start another thread to discuss what the test button does but it appears the most of the "really important people here" do not care.
