Arc Fault Combination Breaker

I'm looking for feedback concerning the Arc fault combination devices. It seems that some inspectors in PA are interpreting the code differently. Some say the standard arc fault breaker meets the requirement of the new code--others; that the new Combination device (that protects from all 3 types of arc fault) is required. These 2 breakers have a significant cost difference--about $5-6 per breaker.

I've also spoke to other electricians concerning this and they perceive the same ambiguity in this situation.

Thanks

Dan

The inspectors need to look in the 2005 NEC. This required the Combination type circuit breakers. There was a sentence in 210.12 that allowed the old style branch/feeder AFCI's to be installed until January 1, 2008. After that only the combination type meet this requirement, even if your jurisdiction has not yet accepted the 2008 code as this was part of the 2005 code.

The original arc fault breaker was designed to detect parrallel faults. The new ones are designed to detect both parallel and series faults.

As stated above, the NEC 2005 requires that all arc faults installed after Jan.1, 2008 must be the combo type. This has nothing to do with the 2008 code. All don't confuse a combo arc fault breaker with the combination arc fault/GFCI breaker. They are different animals.

For once a code rule that is pretty darned clear, and people still can't get it right. What's up with that?
