My wife came into the garage today.I was busy cross referencing the NEC
to an EMC article i was reading. She says to me,"Are all Electricians Insane
or is it just you?" She's an SDSU psych grad BTW.
I laughed and asked why? She replied;"well, your constantly reading a book
that dosen't even have a cover anymore, you obsess over it as if it were the
Dead Sea Scrolls or something,we can't even go to a nice restaurant without you pointing out "Code" violations, you spend hours on the comp discussing
the "Code" with people you don't even know." She continues,"Do all Tradesmen do this?" "Do plumbers sit at the comp at odd hours discussing glues, pipes, and water flow?,Do carpenters have forums about nails, lumber, and the perfect tool belt?"
So i replied;"Yes,we are all crazy, and if it was'nt for us Crazy People
all you Sane people would be on fire!" lol
I have to give her credit, electricians are an odd bunch!
I had to share this! lol

Actually, it is just a few that are insane. Krl you just happen to be one of them. Most of the electricians I know don't even read the code anymore unless they get turned down. BTW-- My book still has the cover--- does that make me sane--- my wife and kids would argue that.

Yea, we're insane. Just look at what we do for a living! :)

On the other hand, about those of us who, by your wife's account, obsess about things, well, at least we're here in a place like this trying to learn how to do things right. At least we're not of bunch of drunks and druggies.

And like Dennis said, we're a small minority compared to all the hacks out there who won't take the time to open a code book, much less own one.

I think the term insane is inappropriate, though. Driven, maybe. Passionate? Enthusiastic? Spirited?

I asked a Doctor that is in that profession, I asked, how do you know your insane? His answer, if you can even answer, your not insane !

I think were all OK in that department, as for the other characteristics that get studied, we'd be a a classic case study of/for a lot of disorders.

Or obsessive compulsive, anal retentive and sometime passive aggressive.

Maybe we are nuts. At least you guys are

Why not anal expulsive??

But I like nuts. Simple. Easy to remember. That fits well..... dual meaning and all. Karls' wife would understand that one.

From one of my favorite movies, National Treasure, the two main characters are discussing how they are going to convince someone that the Declaration of Independence is going to be stolen It reminds me of "Us":

Ben states, We don't need someone crazy. But one step short of crazy, what do you get?

Riley returns, Obsessed.

Ben replies, Passionate.

My Wife knows im passionate about my role as an electrician, maybe too much
at times But, to some it may seem like a bunch of wires that when connected make the TV turn on. 21 years ago the master i started with told me "Always wire buildings,homes,etc.. Like your mother and children were going to live there." I never forgot that.So no matter how obessive it may appear i will never stop learning to wire a safer home. I don't do houses BTW but you get the point! lol

I constantly catch myself looking at electrical work everywhere. just checking for quality of work, code vio's, or to pick up tips. It has become second nature to me.

call me krazy if you'd like...lol

The framer messes up, you move the wall.
The plumber messes up, you mop it up.
The AC guy messes up, you get a fan.

We messes up, call 911.

My wife thinks I am a nut, I have 7-8 copies of the NEC (not including my collection of old NECs)one in each bathroom, truck, bedroom, living room, work bathroom, office...I check the forum several times a day and talk about my forum friends, and told her our next trip to England is going to involve a stop to see a few electricians I met on line.

I think (personally) that it's OK to talk to your self out load, I don't think (personally) its ok to answer yourself out Load, * # @ % , don't count, nor just saying, "Praise the Lord", sounds better than, "OH Sh*t".
