Are thermal overload switches required for fractional horsepower motors?

Are thermal overload switches required for fractional horsepower motors OR can AC toggle switch (1 HP rated) be sufficient??

If a thermal overload is not provided in the switch is thermal overload required to be provided in the equipment?

Typcially these small motor have integral overload protection. If not then a simple toggle switch will not provide overload protection.

Did you mean 1hp rated thermal starter switch ?

You might want to check 430.32(D). Specifics on the installation can make a difference.
There are some cases on not permanently installed motors 1HP and less where the branch circuit protective device can serve as overload

Yea. I'm thinking for small motor loads like VAV's, FSD's. Would a thermal overload be required or an AC toggle switch (see image below) be sufficient?

Does the motor have integral thermal protection? I think that they are.
