I'm unsure how it works (Beosoaker3 can likely shed light) but here is a recent article on EVs and the UK
The government of the United Kingdom is already starting to plan for power shortages caused by the charging of thousands of EVs. Starting in June 2022, the government will restrict the time of day you can charge your EV battery. To do this, they will employ smart meters that are programmed to automatically switch off EV charging in peak times to avoid potential blackouts.

In particular, the latest UK chargers will be pre-set to not function during 9-hours of peak loads, from 8 am to 11 am (3-hours), and 4 pm to 10 pm (6-hours). Unbelievably, the UK technology decides when and if an EV can be charged, and even allows EV batteries to be drained into the UK grid if required.

Do these EV chargers have some sort of built in timer to only charge on off hours? So the owner doesn't have to run at at 11pm to start charging?

Would be interesting if they did, and see the power graph spike at 11pm when all the timers went off...

Yes, either the EVSE, the car, or both will have scheduling capability. So go so far as to communicate with the utility to allow them to control charging windows.

sounds like the beginning of the end ..
There is probably a big button somewhere in the future that limits its subjects to drive , or where to drive. 2nd A

My guess is this will result in large numbers of people having duplicate outlets for charging, one that can communicate with the utility and one that can't

If it becomes a regulation thing, really all folks have to do is get a adequate generator. There's a big call these days in Cali for Transfer Switching.

They do. The one that gets the discounted rate is the one controlled by the utility. You can still charge on-peak in a pinch, it just costs more.

This is sad. Because they aren't fixing the power grid issues, now we have individual entities installing their own generation plants. This mandates lots of private in ground/above ground Diesel tanks or gas cans/propane tanks in people's garages that are an increased hazzard. And I'm willing to bet all these private generators aren't as environmentally friendly at burning those fuels as the generators the PoCos use.

Hopefully it's only one or two crazy people who would pay thousands of dollars to install a generator just to avoid charging during off peak times. And I don't really believe that utilities will shut off people's chargers. More likely that kind of thing will work the way then programs for air conditioners work where they tell the chargers to reduce power but not stop completely

Absolutely true. Not to worry, CA is working on banning the use of fossil-fueled backup generators. That will fix the whole problem, for sure.

California is a messed up state .. I need to move from here one day, just trying to figure out which is best .. tornadoes, flooding or shoveling snow.
