State wide I think we had 2.8% unemployment, locally 2.2%, last month. What is it in your area?

GM strikes at an axle plant have affected some local factories lately so it will go up a bit next month.

You think GM hurt you, try Michigan at 7.2% , the detroit metro area is closer to 20%, thats why I left.

A number of my fellow soon-to-be-EEs are headed down your way after graduation. I thought it was a bit odd though that there were a number of EE jobs posted in Detroit, including a number at GM. I know of a few utility jobs up there too, but I'm not sure how much those are related to the rest of the economy.

Wished I still had the copy of WSJ so I could quote it directly but here is what I remember.

GM in Detroit is suppose to go on a hiring spree by the end of 2008. The number I remember is 16,000. Apparantly GM over the last couple of years has offered a lot of buyouts, not to mention layoffs, and there is a huge shortage of assembly line workers.

The catch is GM has been buying out and laying off employess who made $28 per hour and will replace them with employees who get $14 per hour.

Thats because all the good EE's took the buyout (Not all, but you know what I mean) and went to work elsewhere, same with the talented skilled trades. What is left isnt pretty, so there are some positions needed.

Detroit is in bad shape, you can feel the dread in the air, it is really sad. But if any of your buddies take a job at the GM Proving Grounds I have a house still for sale right down the road.
