This is a detached residential garage.

i guess from the replies i get the notion that this installation is not so obvious and depends on how the AHJ interprets the code section.

2011 fixed that:

334.10 Uses Permitted. Type NM, Type NMC, and Type
NMS cables shall be permitted to be used in the following:

(1) One- and two-family dwellings and their attached or
detached garages, and their storage buildings.

AFAIK, California has yet to adopt 2011... currently using 2008. So it's a no go TTBOMK (especially since edward has confirmed it is a detached garage).

I think I did read that, but had been a while, I only went back and looked at first post. Sometimes I out-think my self.
