First time posting so hopefully this won't seem too basic. Question is, can you re-identify a green wire the same as you can a white or gray to indicate that it is an ungrounded conductor?

My paticular application is for a photo electric sensor on a 120vac system and the cable that is "recommended" for it is a 4 wire cable and one of the wires that is used for signaling is green.

250.119 (2008) added the exception that if the circuit is under 50 volts and class 2 or 3 that the green wire can be used for other than equipment grounding purposes.

All other references that I could find only describe re-identifying white or gray wire for ungrounded uses, they never mention green so is green by default excluded?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.:)

A Green conductor in a multiwire cable assembly can't be re-identified and used as an ungrounded conductor.

The new 2008 Exception does permit power limited, class 2 or 3 circuit cables that operate at 50 volts or less to use a green conductor for other than an equipment grounding conductor. Think about a T-stat wire or Cat-3 cable where there is a green wire used in the circuit.
