I supplied power,480v@3ph 250a, to a large piece of mail processing equipment. The installer has told me that he wants me to run the fire alarm cable for the internal shunt trip with the power, he stated this is the way it is being done at other sites. I stated that this is not the right way to do it, and that its an NEC violation. I am using ART760.55. Can a fire alarm cable ever be in the same raceway as power? The problem is there isn't any access for the f.a. wires, and the installer doesn't want put a hole in his cabinet.

Re: art760.55

I agree with your assessment if the fire alarm circuit is power-limited. If the this is a non-power-limted circuit, it would be fine in the same raceway.

Re: art760.55

Bill, the simplest answer is to read the definitions in 760.2 and follow it to the appropriate articles.

A good example of a power limited FA would be an addressable system, as the main power is fed from a step down transformer.

By the way, do you work at the Wallingford facility?
