Article 505 Temperature Ratings

What determines the temperature rating of equipment. Is it the autoignition temperature of the atmosphere? I am trying to determine what T rating is required for an atmosphere that could contain methane.

Any help is appreciated.

Subsection 505.9(D) explains "T classification" and its application with Zone rated equipment. Subsection 505.9(D)(1) indicates how the T-classification is generally determined. Division rated equipment is similar, but not identical.

Since methane has an auto ignition temperature of 630C, it has a T1 classification in either classification method.

?Temperature rating? has a different meaning and is generally a reference to the ambient that the equipment is permitted to operate in without derating it.
