Article 680

I like to think that I am fairly good with the code, but I really struggle with Article 680. I think that the entire Article really needs a re-write. Too much reference to other sections (and parts) in the Article, and just a silly layout in general. Does anyone agree with me?

Absolutley!
I have always hated the idea: "If "A" then refer to parts I & II. If "B" then parts I & III apply." "If indoors then refer to Chapter 3".
And so on...

IMO the whole thing not only needs a re-write, but a separation. 680 could be all pools. 681 spas. 682 hydromassage tubs. Etc.
Yes, this would add quite a few pages to our beloved big book, but I think the clarification would be worth it.

Talk about stirring the thread... how about the whole NEC.

This type of question is posed in many of my classes, seminars and contractor meetings. For the casual reader of the NEC this is the general thought pattern - make the NEC easier to follow.

As far as 680, it does reference other section numbers alot. So do many other Articles.

It would not be easy, but it sure would be interesting to see how this may be accomplished.

Ryan, how do you think this could be started?

I had started doing it a few months ago, but I realized there was no way I could get it done before the proposal deadline. I think simply re-writing it and submitting it would be the way to do it. I still plan on doing it, and I think in three years I should be pretty close!

I agree that many Articles and sections refer to other parts of the code, which is an NFPA style manual requirement. I made many proposals to the 2008 cycle to try to address this as well, such as in 500-503, particularly the grounding and bonding sections.

I think it can be made into a comprhensible Article (right now it is NOT), but it would certainly take some work.

Ryan, If you do happen to re-write it , could you please help me out and make it more clear about the insulated equipment ground going back to the service vs an existing panel thing, ser cable allowed for pool panel feeder in dwelling? I read this section over and over and over and still am not sure exactly what is the right way to go.

How do you submit such a proposal? If you'd like to just edit a whole article, from start to finish, can you just submit it as one crossed-out, underlined article, or do you do it section by section?

What's your process, Ryan?

I'm pretty sure if you got half of what you'd attempt through, it would be clearer and much improved.

You know, I'm not sure George. I right now I would attempt to simply strike out all of it and then submit a new one. I have a freind on the TCC I plan on asking though.
