Can anyone chime in the this NYC Code requirement for fire alarm splices. To me it seems to limit unnecessary splices. In other words, if it's possible/practical for a straight run, splices must be used only when necessary.

They also have to be on labeled terminal strips.

Thoughts?

Subsection 760.130(B)(4)—Add a new subsection 760.130(B)(4) to read as follows:
(4) Terminations and Splices. Terminations and splices shall be made with terminal blocks and in listed fittings, boxes, enclosures, fire alarm devices or utilization equipment. Splices shall be limited to locations where the conditions of installation require the use of splices.

Just my opinion but this language is so broad that it's pretty unenforceable. If I'm the installer and I decide that the "conditions of installation" require a splice who is to say otherwise.

Not the AHJ, but being a local 3 journeyman for 24 years, past experience we used terminal strips when splices where required, recently last 5 years we started using the high temperature black wire nuts (HID splice nuts). The high temp nuts were used on high rise apartment buildings, new construction.
