Attaching plywood to CMU

We always struggle attaching half inch plywood to a cement block wall. Any suggestions for a bullet proof way to do this?

Toggle bolts (hit the cores) or nail-ins. Never had a problem.

I would be using lead machine screw anchors with a hollow wall set and flat head machine screws. If it is in the basement, I would use pressure treated plywood.

I've been using 3/4" Advantech or treated in basement attaching with Tapcons or attach to a couple of treated 2X's dropped from upper rim of joist. I find 1/2" just too thin to let fasteners such as cable staples to be driven in without bouncing the ply sheet all over or depth to screw in box to my liking (not a code requirement that I know of).

We have not had luck with these. The thickness of the block is only 2"? and the concrete is soft.

I've never had a problem with them but you do need to ensure that you're using the correct length anchor. Problem with block is that when the drill goes through into the hollow space it tends to blow out the back of the hole leaving a small amount of concrete left. When possible this can be mitigated by drilling into the solid portion of the block typically at the ends and middle of the block.

Other than that the best anchors for block are the hollow block anchors. They hold good. Problem is they are a little difficult to find locally. Big box usually does not have them . You can buy them on line or at McMasters. Some industrial suppliers like Fastenal
