External drive (exactly like the Seagate that Celtic showed) and a second internal drive. The internal one I have backed up automatically and the external is just extra precaution. The only thing I loose if they main HD goes out are the programs - just have to re-install. The other one crashes, I just do recopy all the back up to the new HD once it's in. I build my own PCs, and it's not rocket science.
I used to have problems with those old tape drives, but to date have never had an issue with a CD - but I have heard of people loosing data on them.
The only things that requires having a Phd is using Windows and keeping it from hosing you up.
