Balancing Electrical Work with Overall Construction Planning

Hey everyone,

I’ve been involved in a few projects recently where electrical work was heavily dependent on how the rest of the construction was scheduled and budgeted. It made me realize how important coordination is between trades. For example, if wiring or panel installations get delayed because framing or drywall isn’t ready, it can throw the whole timeline (and budget) off balance.

That’s why I’ve started paying more attention to the overall construction estimate at the very beginning of the project. Having accurate numbers not only helps clients but also makes it easier for us electricians to plan our work without running into surprises.

How do you all handle this in your projects? Do you get involved in early cost discussions, or do you typically rely on the GC to handle it?

How do you all handle this
In my experience with union, merit shot, commercial, and residential new work, electrical equipment in the way of other trades gets ripped out.

Electricians who wont coordinate with everyone else get schooled by hard knocks, since GC's wont pay for working backwards.

Estimators keep this under their tall hat, with all things beyond their scope, enabling entry level subs to submit their best bargain basement bid.

The spouse, and second mortgages, must finances subcontractor tuition for under bidding new construction, unless the grand parents pitch in.

You should have mobilizations fees listed in your bid in the event you have to stop work because of a delay, and the GC should have contingency to cover delays. If the prime contract has LD’s it would be listed in each subcontract and back-charged to the sub that causes the delay.
