Does anybody have one of those screw in ballast / Ignitor testers? Do they work very well and are there any specific brands that you would reccomend. It would be for MH and HPS from 400 to 1000w and both 480 and 277v.

I recommend downloading this HID Ballast Pocket/Troubleshooting Guide and using your multimeter.

The one ballast tester I have purchased was a total waste of money.

Good advise, I have a Hubbell tester that screws into a mogul base lampholder, lists the values for diff. HID lamps that one should see w/ a clamp on meter, the troubleshooting guide is a whole lot cheaper and there is more info.

I borrowed one once, and it seemed pretty nice. I'm not sure it's worth the 100 bucks, though. I think it's geared more towards giving you the ability to use semi-trained monkies to service parking lot light PM contracts. In that case, it would probably be worth it.

sometimes it doesn't make a difference what has went bad with some manufacturers. because you have to buy the whole freaking ballast kit with the cap and igniter. you can sometimes tell if it is the lamp or not.
