"Banjo" style meter sockets

Hello all,

I've heard from a few colleagues that older "banjo" style meter sockets are an issue, since they're typically only rated for 60A and the min service size for a single family dwelling is 100A. I've seen that some utility companies forbid them, but I haven't seen any other technical documentation on the matter.

Any insight y'all could offer on these types of meter sockets would be helpful. My Google searches haven't proven conclusive.

They are a round meter socket with a flange on the bottom that attaches to a gutter.

A base is the term I had heard before. I haven’t seen one for quite a while now.
