Was troubleshooting a circuit and found an attic junction box that I thought was associated with the problem.

As I got into it I used my tone tester and found a strong audible tone on the bare EG wires .

I took off the wire nut and it arced as I broke a considerable load.

Someone had used 2 wire NM and used the bare ground as a traveler.

There were 11 4 lamp T8 fixtures controlled through the switches

That was not part of the original problem I was troubleshooting but I did correct a serious situation.

_ _ it happens.

A friend found rows of end to end 96t12 fixtures with the neutrals tied to the case. Worked well for years until things loosened up a bit. Grocery store wondered why some of the the old 12"x12" tile had burn marks on them.

I was at one house where I found a 14/3 with two reds in it. Black, White, Red & Red. That made me cross eyed for a bit.
