I have a new construction project and the customer is installing a solid concrete safe room in the basement. The walls and the ceiling will be constructed of about 10" of solid concrete. My questions is have any of you guys ran across this and do you have any ideas for any type of emergency lighting/electrical. Of course, Im going to try to sell him on a standby generator, but Im just looking for some ideas or suggestions. Thanks

yeah have done quite a few mostly in spec homes so its just a couple lights and a GFCI outlet, a generator is a good idea

FEMA

FEMA

You can also search the FEMA website I believe there is a standard for safe rooms and storm shelters that includes commerical and residential construction. It is not a "standard" but more of a recommended guideline for these types of structures.

Here is a couple of ideas:

1. Simple 90 minute emergency lighting packs.

2. If you want a longer period of emergency lighting, look at a battery unit designed to supply multiple heads, and put a fewer number of heads. The relationship should be mostly linear, half the expected load, double the time.

If this is tornado protection, you may want to put the generator in a concrete protected area. Also I'd put an emergency light at the generator location.
