Hypothetical of course? Can I rough my new house in and the bathroom track lighting approx. 4 - 4 1/2 ft above the top of the tub on the wall, Oh, and its a hydro massage tub oh, and I want a gas fire place at the end of it too. Is that OK? (it is my house, Hypothetically anyway)

The track light is permitted outside of the 3' x 8' tub zone. I don't see the gas fireplace covered under the NEC.:)

No problem on the fireplace. I have seen them sitting on a ledge at the edge of the tub. Remote control for the ignitor.

Art. 680.72 says use the requirements of chapters 1-4. I don't see a 6' radius for a switch

You lost me, what doesn't matter?

I asked the question whether the tub had a shower. It doesn't matter for a track fixture. It can't be there in either case.

If cliff used a wall sconce I don't see a problem with it.

Got it, thanks for the clarification.

410.4 (d)680.74

410.4 (d)680.74

NO parts of cord-connected luminaires, chain-,cable-, or cord-suspended-luminaires, lighting track, pendants or ceiling-suspended fans shall be located within a zone measured (3ft) horizontally and (8ft) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim. 680.74 Bonding All metal piping systems and all grounded metal parts in contact with the circulating water shall be bonded together using a copper bonding jumper, insulated, covered, or bare not smaller than 8awg Solid. If I splash in the tub will the fireplace metal parts come in contact with the circulating water???? (NO, if some one splash?s in the tub)

Bonding is for the tub. Do you honestly think splashing will form a continuous ground to the FP.

After you roll the dice, you may be able to tell me just how quick electricity really is??? No, I don't believe there is a problem with it. BUT, there are no dumb questions. As for the switch as long as it is outside the edge of the tub just like the Good book says under 404.4 Last sentence. Oh, and thanks.

What are you saying here. Are you disagreeing with my statement that a wall sconce can be mounted over the hydro tub? I see nothing in that statement that says I can't.

Cliff-- do you agree you can have a sp switch next to the tub?
Am I reading this to say a single pole switch next to the bath tub, YES, It just can't be installed within wet locations in the tub or shower spaces unless as part of a listed tub or shower assembly. Does that answer your question?

I knew the answer I was trying to say that the fp next to the tub is really no different than a switch being next to a tub.

According to what I read in the 2005 N.E.C. Article 410.4 is if you maintain the distance 3ft horizontally and 8ft above the top of the tub rim Yes, you can install a sconce on the wall.
:)

Quite contra. 410.4 has to do with luminaires while 404.4 has to do with switches, they usually don't even look a like.
