Unless it stated in a spec that the fan work is by others, we do it all. Supply the fan, install it, wire and duct it. .....

I just ducted one the other day ,.. small kit/bath ,..T&M ,..no skin off my back.:)

Usually the line drawn is the ole "who's code book is the rule in " And in Mass it is in the building code ,..1205.2.1 I think:confused: so it falls to "venting by others" for most electricians around these parts.

On a bid job it needs to known in advance who's responsibility it will be.

Here in Tampa our license does not permit us to do venting or other air condition work. What you should do is call your ahj and ask if your allowed.Or try this, rough in the units and call for rough electric.Willing to bet you pass and the AC guy fails his.

This thread should have been titled "I need to vent, or do I?" Way back when we used to vent the bathroom exhaust, but that was when the corrugated plastic was acceptable, and the bathroom fart fan got a 3". In some attached units, that 3" went over 50'. Useless IMHO.

As far as I am concerned a 3" fart fan is worthless no matter what kind of duct is used.

30 years ago when I first moved to NC the hvacguys would not run their own thermostat wire.

I can't tell you how many arguments I got it over that one. The last straw was when the HVAC guys told me they needed a 4 wire thermostat cable from the attic to the outside unit. When the trim out rolled around the unit needed a 6 wire cable.

That was the last therm. wire I ran. Now every HVAC guy in this area runs their own therm. wires and does the ducting for the fans.

I do ducting if its a small job where the HO hires me to install a fan, otherwise it's by other.

In the county I live in Va. I have to run the Al. flex to the perforated soffit or take it to outside and the sideing guys will install the trim. My main job is an industrial electrician and the HVAC or the tin knockers will install the vent.

The HVAC guys almost ALWAYS provide the fans and install the ducting in AZ.

If the job is JUST a fan I will supply it and OCCAISIONALLY duct it. I try and limit my roof leak responsibility.

I put it in my contract as well that it is to be vented by others. If I cut a hole in the roof and theres a leak someday I could have a problem with my insurance covering that, I know tin knockers are insured for it. That usually ends the conversation about who's venting it.

I bit the bullet and hired a real HVAC guy who has vented bath exhaust fans before to do the job for me. Believe me.....in the future, the duct work will NOT be on my plate. Simply ridiculas to expect an electrician to do HVAC work. I have enough trouble keeping current on our codes let alone another trades requirements. Thanks for all the responses.

For what its worth: I'm a GC and I never expect an electrical contractor to run duct work. Its either the GC or the HVAC's responsibility

Simple.........
Exhaust Fan Venting around here, is covered under the HVAC permit. If it's not completed, or correctly done, the Mechanical Insp. FAILS......... NOT the Electrical Insp.........
In other words IF.. the HVAC guys want to pass their Inspections.........

First and foremost may I say HVAC. I have never had a hvac contractor run any BCCs for me, so why would I run ductwork for them. I asked a buddy of mine in Atlanta and his response was that if an EC got caught running ductwork they would actually be fined! Also, for bath exhaust fans you can only run up to 10 feet of flex duct, anything further would have to be hardpiped and anything past 15 feet would have to have an inline exhaust booster. That ought to be enough for any EC to make the hvac guys do their own work.;)

I've got a situation where I'm wiring a 3 plex Condo and the HVAC guy is telling me that I'm responsible for the ducting and I'm saying it is his baby, hence Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning= HVAC. What do you guys see in the field?
They want the electricians to do every thing. I have never heard of the electricians running venting and I sure as hell wouldn't do it. Maybe these guys are just HAC's!!

Tell the general you're going to remove the fans and take them from your bid and recompense accordingly. Tell him to contract them to someone else. I probably wouldn't do this if I liked the general but if you don't hell with him.

Better check with the building inspector before running anything. We have to use 4" flexible aluminum duct...not plastic.

I'd hate to see you have to run it twice......

I agree better check with the building inspector.
I would not duct it out no matter what.
You have to stand up for yourself.
