Some one from washington dc told me they did some remodeling and the electrician put the bath light switch outside the bath room door. He told her the switch has to be 6 ft from the tub .I told her I never heard that before, is that something new or is it a local or state code ?

I have lived in several states, and I have seen different approaches to bathroom light switches. Some states have local rules, I believe, that require the switch to be outside the door. The theory, I suppose, is that they don't want anyone to have to walk into a dark bathroom. I never liked that arrangement. It only matters at night, though. I prefer to walk in, close the door, and then turn on the light. That way, the light does not disturb anyone else who happens to be sleeping nearby.

but think how much fun the kids can have putting you in the dark :D

a regular poster here is a DC inspector he'll pop in eventually to confirm.

Hello....I'm like a bad penny I always turn up. I have never heard this one before we simply follow 404.4.......That switch can be like stick man said 1/32" away as long as it is not within the tub/shower space unless listed as part of a tub assembly.

NEC says very little about switch locations. Other than stairs you could put them all in a garage or closet. Have seen bathroom switches outside. Rather stupid idea if you think about someone in the shower and a kid turns it off. Wish there were no local codes all they do is cause confusion. Should be able to wire the same way where ever we go. Would also like to see a federal license and some control over unlicensed men being allowed to run jobs.

I just read about an amazing, new invention that minimizes this risk. It's called a night-light. :D
