It is a microprocessor controlled, so I would check with the manufacturer on compatibility. The last “new” one I put in was about five years ago.

I'll be running #8 copper anyway and the 50A breaker is the same price as the 40A, so I will just cover my bases.Math looks good.
Not continuous load. You said one forklift. No way could that be continuous load by my knowledge of forklift operation.
i.e. not full current for 3 hours plus.
