I recently installed a 480v 1 ph. battery charger for fork lifts in a commercial warehouse. It was prewired from panel that is not insight of the charger. I recommended installing a disconnect at charger in case the savages run into it with a forklift. At least they would be able to quikly turn power off, Is their a specific code to back this up? I think they would need one in case they wanted to service the unit, right?

625 does not apply to industrial trucks.

I have always installed disconnects for these but for the life of me I can not find an NEC requirement for it. I have been looking since this thread went up.:-?
 
Thanks, I didn't know if the definition for electric vehicles in 625.2 included fork lifts. I guess that falls under industrial trucks, hoists, lifts, and transports. I thought I was right in telling them they needed a disconnect, but the master electrician who installed the first charger didn't.
 
I have always put in a disconnect in for them also. That said, these things don't really need regular maintenance, and when they do need attention, it's for a total changeout. If you run into one, you don't want to be anywhere near it to turn off the power, so a the breaker in the panel feeding it might be the better place.

Doesn't 625.2 include industrial trucks? your cornfusing me:smile:

For the purposes of this article ....... self propelled electric vehicles, such as industrial trucks ...... are not included.

Sorry, the last words are not included I missed that. So why do we install a disconnect? I guess we don't need one? Maybe we should?:confused:
 
interesting - we install disconnects for these too, didn't know of that section. hmmmm (doesn't really make sense not to put a disconnect on them, even though its not required. the transformers that Ive installed all had one user serviceable part - a small fuse on the control panel - and I didn't want anyone having an excuse to get zapped)
