I've been getting a lot of virus Emails today with .zip file attachments. Subjects vary, but some are Hi, Hello, Test, Error, Movie, Server Report, and Status.

Do not open these files!
Don't open any file attachments unless you know what they are and who they are from.

Remember these can say they're from anybody, so don't trust them just because it seems to be from someone you know. I got several today that said they were from me!

Be careful,

Trojan horses, they get into your address book
and redirect thu outlook express.... Norton solved it for me,along with windows updates

I back all important stuff up on second hard drive.XP is bit easier to recover.
To other MP3 kazza fans be carefull.I am a part time DJ at a private club,we use a computer with no modem connection so only input is mp3 thru cd rom we download.A few months ago i excepted some songs from a member (shame on me) they were not scanned for virus and within 5 weeks it slowly shut the computer down.Luckily i had a backup copy or we would have lost 5,000 songs.
What a sneaky way to get a virus, stick it in a song

Bill, if your ISP offers a "web mail" feature, this can often be used to sort the wheat from the chaff without having to preview or D/L the garbage.

Re: * * * BE CAREFUL WITH EMAIL ATTACHMENTS * * *

Jim, some of the higher end drives have a jumper to write protect them at the hardware level. For static data like MP3's, CDROM images, etc, this might be just the ticket. Wire up that jumper to an external switch you can flip when you want to make the drive writable.

will check into that, mine are not high end (western digital).Usually kazaa is running 24 7 but norton has kept me free. And to E mail even if you know the person you could get virus.XP can return to last known working format.I do run 4 computers on a router that acts as a firewall and has stopped most of our problems.Problem with virus is untill its made norton can't stop it.

The Seagate "Elite" SCSI drives (I use a lot of these) were one family that has the write only jumper. They're built like tanks - full height 5.25", weigh between 9-11 *pounds* each :D MTBF ~50 *years*.

If you can find someone decommissioning a mainframe drive array you might be able to score some real cheap.

Tonyi,

Yes, our mail server (after getting 2 updates from McAfee yesterday) now removes most of the infected attachments before they get to me. I've gotten about 3,000 in the last 24 hrs.

BTW, some now seem to be coming thru as .txt attachments and not recognized as yet, so Be careful.
