210.7 (B) Multiple Branch Circuits. Where two or more branch
circuits supply devices or equipment on the same yoke, a
means to simultaneously disconnect the ungrounded conductors
supplying those devices shall be provided at the
point at which the branch circuits originate.

edit to add the definition of the word device:
Device. A unit of an electrical system that is intended to
carry or control but not utilize electric energy.

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

we got off the topic, which is: when calculating the general lighting load, are we required to take each bedroom or group of as a seperate entity, or is there one calculattion for the general lighting load that we can divide as we see fit?

I say, that by code. there is one general lighting load. I can divide that load, and all recs as i see fit.

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

An easy solution is to use remote control receptacles.

Leviton makes a nice system that uses the existing wiring in the home. Add a controller and one switch can control as many different receptacles and circuits as yo want.

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

JBwhite. your correct.Simply take the sq feet of the house x 3 and thats your lighting load.It is not by the room it is by the total.Bob i gave thought to the remotes but how will we know if all received the signal and are on or off ?Might be even cheaper than romex.20 cents a foot for
12-2 ouch

I do not understand.

The material cost are kind of high but the labor is short.

Install a special receptacle at each location you want to control and then either plug in a controller to any plug in the house or hard wire a controller in. You would also likely need a signal bridge at the panel.

I have used this system and have had no problems with it.

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

going back to the OP again. once i have done my lighing load calculation... it is insane to say that since one of the recs from the lighing load is in a different room, that i have to add additional sq footage to the house.

and i thing the x 10 controls work well too. esp the levinthon ones.

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

There is no adding to the number .sq ft x 3 = and your finished with that part.Where you put the outlets makes no differance

then to OP was right, the inspector was wrong.

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

As to being an additional load he was wrong. But as to having an outlet from the general purpose branch in dining room that part is a violation.Someone will likely use it for something other than x mas light.Hazard no but is violation

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

ok then, i have the solution. put one group of lights one the bedroom circuit, switched. put another group of lights on the SA circuit switched. put the two switches where ever your want in a gangable box.

edit: dont use a pilot light sw or we will have to open a new thread.

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

That is pretty much what i suggested .Bit watefull of wire but works.Just back switch them and use as many switches as it takes. No piolot light needed as up is on.If customers wants them and willing to pay then go for it.Is still one other option and all it takes is some whiteout.Scratch out dining room and write in family room.Don't laugh i did this once on my partners addition to his house. He showed a 2nd kitchen in his daughter attached apartment.County rejected it.I said Charlie get me some white out.Changed it to wet bar. That made it legal.

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

You could also use one switch to control a contactor.
Take each circuit to the contactor and then to each room.
It would be more $$$$

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

I think as long as $$$$$ are flowing we should set this up to be run by there computer and cell phone. Why can't the maid just go around and turn them on and off. ;)

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

jim i can hook you up with a good system for that, and even sequence the leaving home, and comming home operation...
dont forget the hvac coffe and other "essentials"

we have the technology.

Re: Bedroom outlets o.k. to serve other outlets

Seems that everyone here agrees that:(Dewelling Units)

1. All wall recpt outlets in the "Dining Room" must be on the two or more SA ckts.

2. The 3VA per sqft should only be used for calculating the minimum general lighting load for service/feeders or the minimum number of branch circuits required for the total sqft (then balanced out by the load not the sqft).

In other words a 900sqft B/R w/ 12 recpt outlets and (4) can lights could be supplied with one 15A AFCI ckt and that same 15A AFCI ckt could supply as many "Christmas Outlets" as desired as long as they were not in the kitchen, pantry, breakfast room, dining room, or similar area of a dwelling unit.
