anyone here use a beha gas lamp tester? i just got the one i bought from ebay and i tested out a florecent lamp with it i had in my basement and it worked fine. anyone use it to check HID lamps and ballasts?

I've used it to check HID lamps, but never any other components. I figure if the bulb is is good, just replace the whole ballast/ignitor/capacitor set.

Greenlee sells the same unit... model 5715.

its the same exact thing as the beha. same case and everything. greenlee must of bought the patent on it or something and started selling it with thegreenlee name on it

They just sell it under the Greenlee label. Beha is a German company.

need the fixtures on to see which lights aren't working...simply replace the lamp...if it works, move on to next...if it doesn't work, replace the ballast kit....I don't see the use of that tester except for checking open lamps in the shop....

I found mine most usefull when contracting larger tenant buildouts. The delivery truck pulls up with the fixtures and lamps for the job. The driver is in a big freaking rush to get to his next delivery. I made him standby while I tested each lamp in the boxes with my tester. Just about every time I found some that were no good , strait out of the case. I haven't used mine in years, maybe the next one you see on ebay will be mine.

I have the Greenlee one, I think it was a waste of money.

New lamp, new ballast kit....no call backs.
I agree. I have the BEHA one, and I've used it maybe 3 times in the last few years.

My process for working on HID fixtures is as follows:
  • Gain access to the fixture, and remove the diffuser or glass
  • Visually quickly examine the ballast for obvious burns and a quick evaluation of its age
  • Replace the lamp, and see if the fixture lamps up.
  • If the fixture lamps up, but the ballast looks old or burnt, replace the whole ballast kit also.
  • If the fixture fails to lamp up, replace the whole ballast kit but leave the new lamp installed
  • Wash the lens and put the fixture back together.

I just dug out my BEHA unit, and their part number was 5717 too, as it is printed on the box. I don't remember if I paid extra for the leather holster or not, but that part number is 5713 judging from the print on the holster.

I don't even want to know the story there, somethings are better left suppressed in the subconscious.

Well, then I guess you don't want to see my T-5/600 that I wrote "Iwire is the best electrician in the world" on it.

Well, not really. Notice that it has their Telex number on the box, so you know it's got some age on it. The fact that it looks so new is a pretty good indication of how useless to me it turned out to be.
