From this topic, I don't want anyone else to take this as a tag or strike against inspectors, but this one guy I've been dealing with is a real pistol!! :)

Re: Beligerant Inspector

this is the kind of thing that around here would be handled with a skecth on the back of an old envelope.

Re: Beligerant Inspector

My take on corrctions:
#1 Not much to show here. New single line and location on bldg. Specify available fault current. What was missing in his opinion?

#2 Splice detail - field item, not needed on plans. Too many different ways to make it.

#3 Sounds like he doesn't know local POCO reg's

As far as making an official complaint YES. If you work for someone let them know what you would like to do. Stay within your company policy. Expain to the mayor exactly what and where the inspector was mistaken on. The mayor needs facts to act not just the "inspector was making me mad." Explain about the wasted time by the inspector holding up the project and your need to make a special trip down to the bldg dept.

If more people would make a offical complaint or protest, these type of inspectors would either get better with what they do or be gone.
I've seen people who think you must count wirenuts as devices for boxfill be inspectors, BUT until the public complains they will keep their jobs. Most people don't want to rock the boat in fear it will be even harder to work in that jurisdiction.

Most people complain when they recieve bad customer service at a retail establishment or they just don't go back. With the inspector, you don't have the luxury of going elsewhere.

Inspectors are public SERVANTS. Our job is to help the people we serve. We do this by enforcing the codes in a just and fair manner. I do my my best to stay within the code and treat everyone with respect.

One the fact for showing those extra items, fine...it's his attitude that made me angry. I don't mind you trying to drive home your point, or if I've made mistake trying to correct it...which I don't mind correcting because I've made mistakes. I'll tell anyone, I'm only 5 years into the business, and still have loads to learn, so correct me, but do it correctly!! :)

Re: Beligerant Inspector

I agree with Larry , inspectors are public servants and their job requires them to professionally deal with designers, installers, etc. You certainly should let his superiors know about his conduct, or misconduct for that matter. He's seems arrogant or incompetent or both.

What sucks is when you go out on a limb and rock the boat, and nothing changes. :)

Lady, I love your grit. If we ever meet, I would consider it an honor to purchase the adult beverage of your choice for you while I had 12 oz of my favorite adult beverage.

I commend you for keeping your cool!

I'm thinking about making a complaint to the mayor. Should I?

Not sure about a complaint, as I was not there. At least a discussion.

Also, how would you all handle this...

I hate being pushed around by anybody. So I usually confront the issue head-on. That could be done in many ways.
And I will always listen to what someone has to say. It's quite possible I was being hard headed. I also might just laugh it off. But, like I said, I was not there, so it is really hard to say what I would do.

Let me ask you this,
if you were having an extra Bad Day, could you have lost your cool?
Maybe this guy was having a really bad day, or week.
Maybe he's having personal problems.
Maybe he quit smoking.
Maybe he's got a nagging wife that won't quit calling him all day 'cause she thinks he's foolin' around when in reality, he's working late to support her and doesn't know how to communicate on a mature level without arguing and taking it out on everyone that's around him.

None of these are excuses for him to act unprofessionally, he could genuinely be an a-hole.
Have you had more than one bad experience with the same inspector?

Re: Beligerant Inspector

So the next time that Ryan, just kidding. :D

When I read the first post I was sorta angry myself.

After reading Larry's reply I thought that seemed really sensible.

But Lady's still mad and I don't blame her either.

The only thing I know how to do that matters is to not accept BS. And I still do sometimes, but I wouldn't in this case.

Glad I could help. :D

Re: Beligerant Inspector

I have called the chief several times in regards to different matters.I was told you are nuts you`ll never pass another inspection. On the contrary the inspectors in this area know when the fail me it better be bonafide and even call me to make minor corrections abd sign it off ;) respect and trust is worth a fortune

Re: Beligerant Inspector

Hehehehehehehe.....

I work with an inspector sorta like that. It is called "Superman Syndrome".....no kidding.

My boss went to a seminar and they talked about inspectors who thought they were God when out in the field and this is what an inspector who acts like that is called behind the professional doors.

No kidding.

The sad part about that is just like with any bad employment decision....you really need a good reason to terminate them or fear being sued.

CALL THE DAMN MAYOR.......

That's exactly what I tell the contractor's who ***** to me about him.....

Now you talk to this guy like a normal person about kids, t-ball, family vacations....he's a hell of a nice guy....just has this power trip going on.

It's a shame....but it's part of life.

By Larry:

I'm just wondering if there even is a way to make a formal complaint. Is there a form.

The last time I had a run in with City Hall they threw up all kinds of insulating procedures. Basically weren't having it.

Re: Beligerant Inspector

The owner of a home I was working on threw an inspector out of her house because he was rude and overbearing. I wasn't there at the time (wish I was). This guy is a jerk too. I'd mention his name and the city (not SF) to see if anyone else has stories about him but that's probably not a good idea.

I've mentioned it before but I like the story. I don't know why people act like that, whatever they do for living.

Re: Beligerant Inspector

We have one in particular inspector here that has that same superman syndrome,The other inspectors can`t stand him, they issue a green correction tag with a list to be done.If he gets that ticket he will 100 % reinspect and come up with off the wall stuff and since it is a 2nd insp. $30.00 and sometimes he won`t even leave a list just a red tag that says 100 % reinspetion required ;) So he had to do it anyway when a 2nd call was made and he got another phone call saying do it and hand write the card.
The next day one of our other supervisors felt the rath of C _ _ Y $30.00 tag because framers had removed a staple to straighten a bowed stud. Another $30.00 tag for bending radius in nm,another $30.00 tag for a cracked receptacle plate.

Re: Beligerant Inspector

I have dealt with folks like this, and at least around here doing any complaining will only lead to problems. Inspectors move jurisdiction to jurisdiction, so you may solve a problem in one county you end up with a worse problem in an another county. I usually try to get on their good side (you know suck up to the person) usually this type of person is a small minded person and love to be stroked.

I have found that if you take the high road and they continue to act like donkey (a**), you will look better to the customer and when they leave you can give them a siingle finger salute and blow off steam....

And...If this does not work, do what Jesus would do, push him into a burning pit for eternity.
