That is interesting. How would I cut the existing post without cutting the UF cables running up the center?

I would worry about digging into the UF that is lying at the base of the existing post.

Decapitate the lamp chassie. :grin:
Drop a piece of galv. pipe down a known distance, you could pre-string the pipe it to assure that your holding the UF taught as your saw into the post, the sound or the pole rattle or sound of the saw will be heard. Best sounds at the top of post!

I'd mark the pipe with one foot with magic mark marker, near desired depth maybe every six inches.

You get the job yet I'm running out of ideas... :)

sorry,didn't realize the wire ran up the center of the post, all the wooden posts i've seen are solid with a 1" groove cut in to one side. to conceal the wire, another piece of wood is hammered into the groove.

these posts were used for shoebox style parkinglot lighting, my guess is they were originally installed in the mid 70's to early 80"s

getting back to your question how to cut the post. a v notch with a sawzall on the corners. then put some weight into it. it should snap easily, leaving the uf undamaged.
