What part of the code would apply to a birthing pool in a hospital ? Art. 680.60 or 680.61?
My pool is really a tub, 95 gal. but it is not "readily disassembled" so does parts 1 & 6 apply (680.60) or parts 1 & 2 (680.61). Or is there somewhere else in the code I should be looking. The answer can impact receptacle and lighting placement drastically. The manufacturer only calls it a pool because of that's what they do in England where the concept was first done. But they do clasify it as "therapeutic". I am leaning toward calling it a tub and meeting 680.60 which means I can have recptacles within 5 feet if GFI protected and I can have a TV coax. below 10feet which is not allowed by part 2 of 680.

I think you have to comply with all three parts 1, 2, and 6.

If you look at the definition of "pool" at the begining of 680, I think this probably fits that. However, it might be possible that it won't contain water on a permanent or semi-permenant basis. (In my opinion, this means it won't be drained after each use.)

680.61 even says you have to follow parts I and II for a pool that can't be easily disassembled.

I think I'm gonna hurl!

Don't hurl. I'm thinking the pool might not be drained after every false alarm:)

Or the pool would set there full of water for hours or even a couple of days because no one knows when Junior is going to make an appearance.

steve66-

If they left it full of water they would have to maintain water chemistry to avoid bacteria growth. I can see this being against "good birthing practices".

The owner's manual should give you strict guildelines for use and I'm betting they'll be followed closely to avoid liability. Our local hospital didn't want to be on the cutting edge of a trend that would open them up for a lawsuit. I bet the AHJ would accept the hospitals recommendation considering they may NEED a receptacle in there.

. . .too late.

bithing pool

it will be drained after each use. The manufacturers instructions are worthless and I have contacted the manufacturer who "has never been asked that question before".

So far no one has gone down a path here that I have not already contemplated so I am going to err on the side of safety and follow part 1, 2 and 6. Receptacles on GFI but within 5 feet of tub. Lights mtd. in ceiling (7'-9"), not above the water surface but within 5 feet of tub, on GFI.

Anyone see an issue with this?
