Anyone have any good reads on this topic? I know it's a requirement but I would like to learn more about it. It's for returning fault current right?

Yes... on a grounded system.

We use the grounded conductor for all grounding purposes on the service side of the service disconnecting means.

We use equipment grounding conductors for all grounding purposes on the load side of the service disconnecting means... where the grounded conductor is isolated from all non-current-carrying metal parts.

The main bonding jumper at the service disconnecting means acts as a combiner for normal grounded conductor current and equipment ground fault current.
