Bonding a Gas Line

What about 250.52(B)?

(B) Not Permitted for Use as Grounding Electrodes.
The following systems and materials shall not be used as
grounding electrodes:
(1) Metal underground gas piping systems

Allow me to try post #10 again:

While few basements exist here, and few gas pipes are underground on "customer side" of gas meter, my jurisdiction treats customer side gas pipes as a Grounding Electrode System (GES) to be bonded per 250.104(B), even if just by appliance EGC, however, "utility side" of gas meter is prohibited from bonding per 250.52(B)(1).

If black pipe in LittleBill's basement is a utility-side gas line, my jurisdiction says bonding is prohibited per 250.52(B)(1).

If your AHJ says that section of gas piping is an electrode then I suppose you could.
The NEC just does not want some goofball trying to use it as the primary or sole electrode.

Actually, no its the gas co that does not want its gas line used as a GE.
1. they have cathodic protection and your connection will affect that
2. Gas meters have dielectric unions, to keep you from using the gas line as a GE
3. Most new gas lines are HDPE
