Bonding a Service Mast.....inspired by infinity.

So, you have a service mast consisting of RMC through the roof for utility connection, and for some reason, have completed the mast with PVC going into the meter scocket. And now you have a piece of RMC containing service conductors which is not bonded.

Would it be permissible to install a bond clamp on the RMC near the mast head and bond it by routing the grounded conductor through it?

Sure and around here that is required when we run PVC underground over to a utility pole and run up the pole with RMC.

We are required to use rigid 90's at the pole, but the POCO is suppose to take care of the bonding part. I've never seen it done yet.

Yeah, have you ever looked closely at the bonding they do? They connect the clamp on the RMC to the "down ground" on the pole, generally with what looks #6 or #8 solid bonding jumper. I'm thinking any fault current imposed on the RMC is going to vaporize that conductor pretty quickly, especially considering you'll be pretty close to the source transformers.

Our big friend from Fall River just did one recently, he used the right size jumper. :)

National Grid? In the spec book NG says to just attach the clamp to the RMC, and they do the actual connection for bonding...


NStar must be different?

I don't know the POCO, it was Wareham, MA.

One guy did a service and the power company would not connect to it without the mast being bonded. DS was sent to take care of it .... he called me and I told him the size. :cool:
