Explain what is meant by voltage gradients? Bonding a in-ground pool. When are metals of the pool are bonded with a soild number #8 copper, I was told to start from the motor and bond all parts them run the #8 to a ground rod and drive it into the earth at least eight feet. I told the buidling offical that I did not have to drive a ground rod and attach the #8 soild to it. Can someone explain? Also, a pool from pool-o-rama in chicago, the outter rim of the pool is metal so I bonded that and the inspector to me that I did not have to bond that.

Re: Bonding-pools

Make a photocopy of the pool grounding pictorial in the Soares Grounding book, give it to the inspector.

Mail a copy to the inspection department.

Re: Bonding-pools

A voltage gradient is created by current flow in an inductor. A potential difference will be present between any two nodes.

Re: Bonding-pools

Tony, seeing how you're a Chicagoan when I list these code numbers add your own 18-27 to the beginning of them. 680.22(1)It shall not be the intent of this section to require that the No. 8 or larger solid copper bonding conductor be extended or attached to any remote panelboard, service equipment, or any electrode, but only that it shall be employed to eliminate voltage gradients in the pool area as
prescribed.

Re: Bonding-pools

I should have mentioned above I'm useing 1999 NEC / 2000 Chicago.

680.22 again,
(3) All metal fittings within or attached to the pool structure. Isolated parts that are not over 4 in. (102 mm) in any dimension and do
not penetrate into the pool structure more than 1 in. (25.4 mm) shall not require bonding.

PS. 680.26 2002 NEC is bonding
