I have a Bosch cordless screwdriver. Great little tool except for one thing. When I leave it in the cold (every night in my truck) the batteries die. Anybody have the same problem. None of my other battery tools are an issue. Could it be the type of battery? Lithium-ion

I got one as well (10.8V) and it dies every night. Pretty dissapointed in it. It does make trimming out much easier though.

Can't speak for lithium-ion batteries (YET), but lead acid batteries supply less power the colder it is, more power when they are warmer, but temperature also effects their life heat shortens the life.

I have literature on lithium batteries in the office, I will check it out in the morning.

The edition of Handbook of Batteries in my library does not make any statement about reduced power from cold It does mention reduce life from temperature and multiple full discharges, in lieu of partial discharges and then charging. I have attached a web ling that may cover this issue, I did not read the complete web page as I am running late this morning.

Just talked to Bosch tools on the phone. They said pretty much leave it in the cold and the batteries die. They are finding this with their "Litheon" batteries.
They suggest I bring it in the house every night to keep it warm. Yea, thats realistic. I sugest they give me a refund and they oblige.
So the verdict is in. This tool is a bust, unless you live in a warm climate I guess.
Here it is by the way.

Yeah thats convenient.

I guess you could install electric heat in your truck and just plug it in every night.

We have five of these. They have had no issues with cold, and the charge last what we consider to be a long time. They fold and unfold easily, have a well-aimed LED that shines onto the work, and there are two speeds.

In low, they're powerful enough to drive screws into solid wood as well as plastic anchors, and in high they're fast when you have long screws like toggles and device screws. You can even change speeds while running.

Cold kills any battery...killed my calculator too....(but that's another story)

Li-Ion batteries are not the type you should put in extreme temps.
they are a fragile battery...same with the Li-Po.

Best thing to do is to just bring the drill and any battery in at night

I don't have any problems with my DeWalt batteries have many of them, and am not about to bring batteries inside durring the cold.

I don't have the cordless screwdriver in question, so I guess this is off topic. But I have to bring my Porter Cable 14.4 batteries in at night when it's below freezing. Not because they'll go dead, they'll hold their charge just fine. The problem is I can't charge them when they're too cold... :(

I being all my batteries and meters in at night and real cold weather I put a handy light by the battery in the truck. I also have the Bosh screwdriver but I don't like it as well as my 18v DeWalt that I have. I think the directions tell you not to leave them out in the cold. Just like any other battery, flash light, truck, car, drills, cold and batteries do not go together for long periods of time.

You can buy battery warmers in two styles: wrap-around and flat plate. Here's one:

J. C. Whitney

Bet you didn't know they were still around.

You right I did not J.C. whitney was still around. When I use to work on cars I brought alot from them. Or were talking about the battery warmers? I did not know they were still around. Think I'll get one. Thanks

I don't have a cordless screwdriver. we use drill drivers which is close I guess. I have 12V Dewalts and 18V firestorms from black & decker (cheap Dewalt) the 18V firestorms last about the same as a 12V Dewalt and might have 1 IPT more. for drilling holes we use 24V Dewalts they are great and batteries last a good long time. the torque is very high and can twist you up if you catch something in the wood and are not prepared.

I have two of the new makita lithium ion tools and those batteries are awesome. They last all day unless I'm really, really working them hard and I have not had any problems with cold killing the batteries. It's supposed to be 10 F tonight let's see how they do tomorrow:smile:
